Deuteronomy 25:2 Parallel Translations

If the person who's in the wrong deserves to be beaten, the judge will order him to lie down. Then the judge will have him beaten with as many lashes as the crime deserves.(GOD'S WORD®)

25:2 And it shall be, if the wicked man [be] worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, {b} and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.
(b) When the crime does not deserve death.

WES:

25:2 Beaten - Which the Jews say was the case of all those crimes which the law commands to be punished, without expressing the kind or degree of punishment. Before his face - That the punishment may be duly inflicted, without excess or defect. And from this no person's rank or quality exempted him, if he was a delinquent.

MHC:

25:1-3 Every punishment should be with solemnity, that those who see it may be filled with dread, and be warned not to offend in like manner. And though the criminals must be shamed as well as put to pain, for their warning and disgrace, yet care should be taken that they do not appear totally vile. Happy those who are chastened of the Lord to humble them, that they should not be condemned with the world to destruction.
